WHY IS HAIR IMPORTANT FOR MEN?

Hair care is not entirely a women’s issue. Maintaining well-groomed hair is as important for men as it is for women. As the cliché goes, “Your hair is your crown and glory” regardless of gender. After all, hair is your best accessory. And for men, well-groomed, thick hair enhances an already good-looking face. To some extent, it adds character to your personality and even concretizes your identity.

HAIR CARE TREND IN MEN

The obsession with having great-looking hair is evident. Just take a look at the personal hair care and grooming products specially formulated and intended to keep men’s hair healthy and well-groomed, which you can find on the shelves of any local supermarket.

One of the survey respondents said, “I’m sometimes surprised at how many grooming products I have, but I use them all. They’re essential for my hair; otherwise, it’s just a mess.” In addition, Sherif Mehmet, the men’s grooming director of the British Barbers Association, said that the men’s grooming industry is definitely booming and continued, “For many men, this is a daily ritual. The men’s grooming market is exploding with new products hitting the shelves every week.”

The survey also revealed that a third of the participants were encouraged by their partners, 44% wanted to look their best, and 13% were inspired by celebrities like David Beckham and David Gandy.

BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE

In addition to its aesthetic value, hair has a biological significance that most people may not be familiar with. Interestingly, the defining feature on top of your head is nothing but a tough protein called keratin, composed of dead skin cells. Also, our bodies are almost entirely covered with hair. The hair on your head is the first line of defense against the sun’s UV rays. The same goes for body hair; eyebrows and eyelashes also help protect the eyes from UV rays and debris.

In addition to protecting the head from harmful rays, it helps circulate air around the scalp and keeps the head cool by excluding ambient heat. At the same time, it acts as a natural insulator by trapping body heat and keeping it close to the skin, helping to prevent a drop in body temperature.

A fun fact about hair is that it can hold concentrations of heavy chemicals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic ten times more than in blood or urine. And so, hair can be used to detect these harmful substances in the body during testing. Did you know that hair cells stimulate neurons, giving us a sense of direction and helping us maintain balance in our bodies?

HAIR AS A SIGN OF VIRILITY IN MEN

Hair, along with muscles and muscle strength, is the embodiment of masculinity and manhood in men. A thick head of hair combined with a well-toned body indicates the perceived image of a testosterone-filled man. The bigger the muscles and the thicker the hair, the more a man is loaded with the masculinity hormone symbolized by the penultimate macho man. Ultimately, testosterone is often associated with sexual desire and stamina and is synonymous with it.

So when a man shows signs of hair loss, it creates the perception that he has lost some of his masculinity. This creates a dent in a man’s self-assurance and self-confidence, as he feels he has lost some of his manhood when his hair starts falling out. Therefore, more men showing signs of male pattern baldness put in a lot of effort to hide or treat their thinning hair as soon as close signs emerge.

Ironically, compiled statistical data on hair loss shows that 30% of those who suffer from hair loss would gladly give up sex just to get their hair back.

INCREASING COMPLAINTS OF HAIR LOSS

As men age, the likelihood of hair loss increases. According to statistics, 70% of men will have noticeable hair loss by the time they reach 60 years old. However, the same statistics show that 40% of men will begin to show visible signs of hair loss by the age of 35. This is a significant number. The percentage of young men losing their hair could be due to genetic, stress, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. And if you think you are the only one suffering from hair loss, think again. Some young celebrities who have succumbed to hair loss include British actor Tom Felton from the Harry Potter movies, footballer Wayne Rooney, Backstreet Boy AJ McLean, and N’Sync member Joey Fatone.

As reported by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery website, a Spanish study found that 62% of bald men experienced a loss of confidence. Albert Mannes, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, said, “Hair loss is associated with aging, and thick hair has always been associated with youth and masculinity.”

KEEPING HAIR THICK IS IMPORTANT

Three young celebrities made a bold choice to find a surgical solution to protect their hair. These celebrities admitted to having hair transplants to combat hair loss.

In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ (ASPS) 2013 statistical report, hair transplants are listed as the 6th most common cosmetic surgical procedure among men closely following facelifts. Approximately 71% of hair transplant patients are men, indicating the importance of maintaining thick and growing hair. As the demographic ages, the percentage of men receiving the procedure also increases. Hair is definitely crucial for men, playing an important role in any man’s life from the biological importance it holds to aesthetic appeal, maintaining youthfulness and masculinity.
